Short and to the Point
Be careful what you believe. There is a lot of garbage on the internet that gives false hope to those who have heard they are Cherokee. I assure you, the only way you can know for certain is to do the research using standard genealogical methods. DNA won't tell you if you are Cherokee. Family stories prove nothing. And you can't tell by looking at old family pictures. Research, research, research. It is the only way to know.

I have really enjoyed looking over your blog today and reading some of your posts. My Father, used to always tell us that he was descended from "an Indian princess". Now he never specified a tribe and he was probably repeating something he was told himself as a child. I am more inclined to believe that, if there is Indian at all, it is Creek and not Cherokee. But I haven't been able to verify anything yet so I'm no making any claims. I know what you mean about trusting what is on the Internet and that advice is not confined to Cherokee research, there is garbage on all fronts. If pictures were proof, I have a doozy of a on -- most people say it looks like a picture of an Indian family. But then again, as you pointed out in one of your posts, what does a typical Cherokee, or member of any other tribe for that matter, look like. So regardless of Family Photos, Family Stories or Family Rumors, I am not claiming any heritage until I have proof. Again, I really enjoyed reading your posts and thank you.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on this point. To illustrate: My aunt wanted so much to connect us to the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, she was willing to fabricate a lineage in order to do so. The particular line she used was never connected to the family she listed. They were Cherokee, but had long left the Old Nation to live in Missouri and were no longer citizens.
